When it comes to the Hengchun Peninsula, the southernmost tip of Taiwan, it is always associated with sunshine, beaches, and vitality. However, medical resources are scarcer than one might imagine. Dr. Chen Ming-chu, an obstetrician and gynecologist at Hengchun Christian Hospital who received the 35th Medical Dedication Award for 'Individual Medical Dedication,' was once the only OB/GYN on the entire peninsula for two years. She not only handled outpatient clinics but also delivered babies and performed surgeries, eventually paying the price with her own health, requiring dialysis. Yet, she has no regrets, believing it is God's will and that she will continue to serve as long as the hospital needs her. Born into a wealthy family in the Philippines, Dr. Chen was influenced by her grandfather to pursue medicine. She recalls how her grandfather would take her to visit employees' homes, where she saw people suffering and dying without access to medical care. He told her that if she became a doctor, she must care for the poor in the Philippines. She followed his advice, even sacrificing her own salary to cover medical costs for patients who couldn't afford them. She eventually moved to Taiwan, following friends and colleagues. Her journey to Hengchun Christian Hospital began with a single phone call. For 26 years, she has remained there, often serving as the only OB/GYN, relying on prayer to endure the grueling 24-hour shifts and limited rest. The physical toll eventually led to kidney failure, and she has been on dialysis for five years. Despite offers for higher-paying positions elsewhere, Dr. Chen stays because she feels a responsibility to the local women. She worries about the risks of transferring patients to distant hospitals in Donggang, which can take hours. She remains committed to her patients, even going to great lengths—like sharing a drink with locals—to encourage them to undergo necessary screenings like Pap smears. Her dedication is driven by faith and a deep sense of duty to the community.
