Zheng-Xi Meeting Concludes; Lai Ching-te: Using 'Peace' to Package Unification Brings Endless Trouble to Taiwan

KMT Chairperson Cheng Li-wun recently led a delegation to visit China and met with CCP General Secretary Xi Jinping. President Lai Ching-te, who also serves as the DPP Chairperson, stated today (15th) that 'using peace to package unification' not only goes against public opinion but will also bring endless trouble to Taiwan. He emphasized that breaking free from the 'One China' framework and engaging with the world is the correct path for Taiwan. The DPP held its Central Executive Committee meeting on the 15th, where President Lai expressed his views on the 'Zheng-Xi meeting' held recently in Beijing. Lai stated that love, peace, and non-violence are the founding spirits of the DPP, and peace is the highest goal pursued by the DPP government. However, he emphasized again that one must have ideals for peace, but not illusions. Peace cannot be achieved through the compromise of sovereignty, incorporating Taiwan into the 'One China' framework, or aligning with authoritarian regimes. He pointed out that using peace to package unification violates public opinion and will bring endless trouble to Taiwan. Lai added that the Republic of China (Taiwan) is founded on freedom, democracy, and human rights. These are shared values with the democratic world and the common political foundation for cooperative development and creating peace. The flourishing development of Taiwan over the past decade proves that moving away from the 'One China' framework and reaching out to the world is the correct path and the future pursued by the people of Taiwan.
