"GIS Taiwan 2026 Global Think Tank Forum" opened today (29th). In her opening address, Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim stated that this year's forum theme is "Connection and Transcendence," focusing on two academic sub-topics: "Global Regionalization" and "Emotional Economy." She encouraged young people to make good use of this cross-generational, cross-disciplinary exchange platform to build deep connections that transcend geographical boundaries and generational divides through critical thinking and dialogue on complex issues, jointly facing current and future challenges.
Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim attended the opening ceremony of the "GIS Taiwan 2026 Global Think Tank Forum" on the morning of the 29th and delivered a speech in English. She noted that many international students were present, including young partners from Japan, Indonesia, the United States, China, Germany, and Paraguay gathered in Taipei. She has always believed that a nation's greatness lies not only in its current development achievements but also in the passion, action, and leadership demonstrated by the next generation. Seeing the students actively involved in continuing this excellent tradition, now in its 17th year, fills her with confidence and pride for Taiwan's future.
The Vice President mentioned that this year's forum theme, "Connection and Transcendence," precisely addresses the core challenges and opportunities of our time. As the world undergoes drastic changes and the global structure is profoundly reshaped amidst an increasingly fragmented international landscape, the first sub-topic, "Global Regionalization," accurately points out a key transformation, vastly different from the world she understood during her university years.
Vice President Hsiao further elaborated that the tension between global integration and local preservation is not a new phenomenon. Decades ago, author Thomas Friedman, who proposed the concept of "The World Is Flat," described this phenomenon in his book "The Lexus and the Olive Tree," illustrating the continuous interplay between the drive for modern, globalized prosperity and the deep-rooted desire to protect local identity and traditions.
Vice President Hsiao believes that we are now entering a new chapter and facing new challenges in this dynamic transformation. While current globalization trends reflect a more divided world, they also create opportunities for countries to redefine their positions. For Taiwan, the journey of overcoming numerous challenges has not been an obstacle to globalization; on the contrary, it has been a source of confidence in engaging with the world. As a leader in global advanced technology, Taiwan understands that innovation cannot exist in a vacuum, which leads to the second sub-topic, the "Emotional Economy."
Vice President Hsiao stated that in an era of accelerating digital networks and artificial intelligence, the true measure of progress lies in bridging the gap between technological advancement and humanistic care. The "Emotional Economy" reminds us to closely link rapidly developing technology with genuine human needs, ensuring that the digital infrastructure we build enhances social well-being, protects data privacy, and fosters true global communities.
Vice President Hsiao expressed that young students delving into these complex dynamic changes with their unique perspectives demonstrate the soft power, creativity, and innovative thinking of their generation. She believes no issue is too complex or profound for university students to tackle. Finally, the Vice President encouraged young people from all nations to engage in exchanges through keynote speeches, workshops, and in-depth discussions, fully leveraging the potential of this cross-generational, cross-disciplinary platform and building deep connections that transcend geographical boundaries and generational divides, as this is a golden period in life to broaden horizons and participate in the world.
