The Central Weather Administration (CWA) announced today (23rd) that nine typhoon names have been updated this year, such as 'Dim Sum' named by Hong Kong or 'Frog' named by North Korea. If named in sequence, following Typhoon No. 8 'Fig', Typhoon 'White Dolphin' and Typhoon 'Whale' may appear later today. According to CWA typhoon information, there are currently two typhoons dancing on the sea, including this year's Typhoon No. 7 'Mekala' and Typhoon No. 8 'Fig'. Both typhoons are predicted to turn north and move towards the sea south of Japan. The CWA stated on its Facebook page 'Weather Report - CWA' today that the nine typhoons removed from the World Meteorological Organization's list in 2024 have also had their new names approved this year and are joining the rotation. According to the pattern, these new typhoon names will likely appear in the Pacific or South China Sea around 2029 to 2030. The CWA pointed out that the nine typhoon names include 'Koinu' named by Cambodia, which is the name of a tree; 'Krovanh' named by North Korea and Hong Kong, representing an animal and Cantonese 'Dim Sum' respectively, a local delicacy; Japan contributed two astronomical constellation names, 'Higoshi' representing Hydra and 'Funami' representing Puppis. Additionally, 'Taru' from Micronesia means 'greeting' in the local language; 'Nalgae' from South Korea symbolizes wings; 'Prapiroon' from Thailand means 'east wind'; and finally, 'Bavi' named by Vietnam is the name of a flower. The CWA explained that the naming of typhoons in the Northwest Pacific and South China Sea is coordinated by the Typhoon Committee under the United Nations World Meteorological Organization. The committee consists of 14 countries or regions, with each member providing 10 names, totaling 140 names that are used in rotation. The Northwest Pacific averages about 26 typhoons per year, so the naming list is completed in about 5 to 6 years. When the last name is used, the next typhoon will revert to the first name in the list. The CWA stated that a typhoon name is usually permanently removed for two main reasons: first, if it caused devastating destruction, resulting in severe casualties or significant economic losses; second, if the name causes controversy or misunderstanding, has negative connotations in certain languages, or conflicts with the religious views of some countries, it may be proposed for replacement. The CWA concluded by mentioning that following 'Fig', Typhoon 'White Dolphin' and Typhoon 'Whale' are expected to appear this year, but the intensity and impact of a typhoon have no real connection to its name. Even if typhoons share the same name, their actual track and development depend on the prevailing atmospheric conditions.
