To welcome the 499th anniversary of the founding of Indonesia's capital, Jakarta, this month, the Jakarta local government held the "Commemorative Event for Betawi Religious Scholars and Descendants of Forefathers" on the evening of the 19th as part of the celebration series. The event paid tribute to local religious leaders, remembered historical forefathers, and offered collective prayers to pass on their historical contributions.
Betawi is the traditional indigenous ethnic group of Jakarta.
The Jakarta local government stated that the "Commemorative Event for Betawi Religious Scholars and Descendants of Forefathers" (Haul Akbar Ulama dan Habaib Betawi) is an Islamic traditional commemoration of the anniversary of passing. Through collective prayers, it remembers deceased forefathers and guides the public to learn from the spirit left by past religious leaders.
The commemorative event took place in the square in front of the National Monument (Monas). The National Monument, 132 meters high with a golden torch at its summit, is a historical symbol and core landmark of Indonesia's struggle for national independence, as well as an important square for locals to gather and for the government to hold various major events.
The commemorative event was attended by Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung, Deputy Governor Rano Karno, local officials, Betawi religious leaders, and thousands of Muslim attendees. Representatives from other denominations including Protestantism, Catholicism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Confucianism were also present, demonstrating the local emphasis on inclusive religious diversity.
Governor Anung stated in his speech that throughout Jakarta's long history, Betawi religious leaders have helped build social harmony, strengthen morality, and deepen patriotic values. Looking ahead to Jakarta's 500th anniversary next year, the city must continue to be a home where diverse ethnic groups, cultures, and religions coexist harmoniously.
To honor the long-term historical contributions of Betawi religious leaders, the Jakarta local government released the "Directory of Betawi Religious Scholars and Descendants of Forefathers" (Buku Direktori Ulama dan Habaib Betawi). It currently includes the names of 145 religious figures who have contributed in the fields of education, religious propagation, and social welfare. The content will be continuously enriched based on suggestions from various parties in the future. (Editor: Liu Xianghua)
