Regarding Taitung County Magistrate Rao Ching-ling promoting agricultural products via video at the "Straits Forum" organized by the CCP, Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) Chairperson Chiu Chui-cheng stated today (18th) during an interview on an online live broadcast program that he does not understand why Rao Ching-ling must sell fruit on a platform with strong united front implications. If agricultural product sales have political preconditions, they carry political risks. Over the past 20 years, China has "raised, trapped, and killed" Taiwanese farmers in countless cases. The MAC opposes selling fruits under political preconditions precisely to protect farmers. #Reported by Radio Taiwan International (RTI) reporter Chen Nien-yi#
The CCP recently held the 18th "Straits Forum," where Taitung County Magistrate Rao Ching-ling promoted agricultural products through a recorded video.
During an interview on POP Radio's "POP News" program with host Huang Wei-han today, MAC Chairperson Chiu Chui-cheng stated that the "Straits Forum" has fundamental differences from the Taipei-Shanghai "City Forum." The "City Forum" is jointly hosted by cities from both sides of the strait on a rotating basis, while the "Straits Forum" is entirely orchestrated by the CCP authorities. It is not an exchange based on equal dignity or normal health. Therefore, as early as the Ma Ying-jeou administration in 2012, central and local government officials were prohibited from participating in the "Straits Forum."
Chiu Chui-cheng also pointed out that if agricultural product sales have political preconditions, they carry political risks. For instance, China used to import Taiwanese agricultural products, but would cut off imports whenever cross-strait relations soured. Over the past 20 years, China has "raised, trapped, and killed" Taiwanese farmers in countless cases. He does not understand why Rao Ching-ling must sell fruit on a platform with strong united front implications. Chiu Chui-cheng said: "(Original sound) For example, going to the 'Straits Forum' this time, one must agree to the political preconditions of the so-called '1992 Consensus and opposition to Taiwan independence' in order to sell fruit. Is this a political order or a regular fruit order? Therefore, we oppose our politicians selling fruit on this united front platform. If you want to go normally, as long as it's a straightforward transaction between civilians, it's very normal. You can go anytime, so why choose to sell fruit on this united front platform?"
Chiu Chui-cheng stated that this year's "Straits Forum" included a "docking and signing ceremony" for 10 measures related to Taiwan. Approximately 5 groups and individuals from Taiwan attended the signing. The MAC has requested the Ministry of Agriculture to conduct relevant investigations based on its responsibilities, not only to understand the content of the agreements but also to assess their substantive impact on Taiwanese agriculture and clarify any doubts about "raising, trapping, and killing" Taiwanese farmers.
Chiu Chui-cheng emphasized that Taiwan's agricultural and diplomatic departments have always cherished farmers and worked hard to help them develop diverse overseas markets. However, China is not a long-term stable market, and Taiwan should not go back to the old path. (Editor: Song Wan-yuan)
