Leaders attending the Group of Seven (G7) summit in France issued a leaders' statement after the second day of meetings today (17th), mentioning the Middle East, Ukraine, and the Indo-Pacific region, and stating, "We oppose attempts to unilaterally change the status quo in the East China Sea, South China Sea, and Taiwan Strait." According to a report by the Yomiuri Shimbun, G7 leaders, in a statement titled "Geopolitical Issues," explicitly stated their support for the opening of the Strait of Hormuz. They also mentioned that the United Kingdom and France are preparing to ensure navigation safety in the Strait of Hormuz through a multinational framework, evaluating this as playing an "important role in the normalization of the strait." The leaders' statement also expressed pleasure with the agreement between the United States and Iran, emphasizing that "a historic opportunity has been provided to reject Iran's acquisition of nuclear weapons and missile development," indicating the G7's support for the implementation of the agreement. Regarding Russia's continued aggression against Ukraine, the statement also pointed out that military aid to Ukraine would be expanded and sanctions against Russia strengthened. In terms of military aid, the statement specified, "We agree to strengthen air defense capabilities, supply interceptor missiles, and enhance long-range attack capabilities." Furthermore, the statement, without naming but with clear implication towards China, stated, "The importance of a rules-based, free, and open Indo-Pacific. We reaffirm our opposition to any unilateral attempts to change the status quo, especially by force or coercion in the East China Sea, South China Sea, and Taiwan Strait. These should be resolved peacefully through dialogue alone." The leaders' statement also addressed North Korea's development of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles, stating a commitment to "achieve complete denuclearization of North Korea in accordance with United Nations Security Council resolutions" and demanding that North Korea promptly resolve the abduction issue. The Yomiuri Shimbun analyzed that in the face of increasingly tense regional situations, the G7 intends to demonstrate unity. The G7 summit is expected to conclude after discussing issues of trade inequality. (Editor: Song Wanyuan) Source Link: https://www.rti.org.tw/news?uid=3&pid=215009
