This was the first-ever pitcher-batter showdown between Taiwanese players in MLB. On the 15th, Astros pitcher Teng Kai-wei started and faced Tigers batter Lee Hao-yu twice, striking him out once and allowing one hit. Teng Kai-wei pitched 3.1 innings, gave up 3 home runs, and took the loss. He recorded 9 strikeouts in the game, reaching a career milestone of 100 strikeouts. Lee Hao-yu had two hits and his first career stolen base.
In the Major League Baseball (MLB) game between the Houston Astros and the Detroit Tigers, Taiwanese pitcher Teng Kai-wei started for the Astros.
The highlight of this game was the first-ever pitcher-batter confrontation between Taiwanese players in MLB. In the top of the second inning, Teng Kai-wei faced Gleyber Torres. After one strike, Torres left the game due to injury, and Lee Hao-yu came in to pinch-hit for the Tigers. Lee Hao-yu was struck out by Teng Kai-wei's sweeper.
The two Taiwanese stars faced each other again in the top of the fourth inning with one out. Teng Kai-wei's first pitch was hit by Lee Hao-yu for a single to right field, which led to Teng Kai-wei being removed from the game.
Teng Kai-wei's performance was not ideal. Although he didn't allow any hits in the first inning, he issued four balls and hit batters, giving the Tigers one run.
In the top of the second inning, Teng Kai-wei gave up a solo home run to Kevin McGonigle. In the top of the third with two outs, he allowed a two-run homer to Colt Keith, followed by a solo homer from Spencer Torkelson.
In the top of the sixth, Lee Hao-yu hit a ground ball to shortstop for an out against Astros relief pitcher AJ Blubaugh. In the top of the eighth with one out, Lee Hao-yu hit a single to left field off Jayden Murray and then successfully stole his first base in his MLB career.
Before this game, 27-year-old pitcher Teng Kai-wei had accumulated 95 strikeouts in his MLB career. His strikeout of James Outman in the second inning today marked his 100th career MLB strikeout, making him the fourth Taiwanese pitcher in MLB history to achieve this milestone, following Chien-Ming Wang, Hong-Chih Kuo, and Wei-Yin Chen.
Teng Kai-wei pitched a total of 3.1 innings, throwing 81 pitches, and allowed 5 earned runs on 6 hits, including 3 home runs. He issued four walks and recorded 9 strikeouts. Giving up 3 home runs and striking out 9 batters in a single game are both personal career highs so far. His fastest pitch was around 152 km/h. The Astros lost the game 3-9. Teng Kai-wei took his sixth loss of the season, and his ERA is now 4.31.
