The Joint Admissions Committee for Mainland Chinese Students announced the 2026 admissions guidelines for master's and doctoral programs for mainland Chinese students, offering a total of 1,427 slots. Only mainland students already studying in Taiwan are eligible to apply. This year, applicants are also restricted from applying to programs of the same academic level for which they already hold a degree, which is expected to further reduce the number of eligible applicants.
The website of the Joint Admissions Committee for Mainland Chinese Students recently posted the 2026 admissions guidelines for master's and doctoral programs. The doctoral programs offer 236 slots, and the master's programs offer 1,191 slots, for a total of 1,427 slots, a slight decrease from 2025 (1,437 slots).
For doctoral programs, National Taiwan University offers the most slots with 34, followed by National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University with 26, and National Cheng Kung University with 18. For master's programs, National Taiwan University offers the most slots with 149, followed by National Cheng Kung University with 90, National Tsing Hua University with 58, and National Taiwan Normal University with 58.
According to the guidelines, eligibility for master's and doctoral programs for mainland students is limited to individuals whose household registration is in Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangdong, Hubei, and Liaoning provinces in mainland China, and who hold a master's or bachelor's degree from a public or private university in Taiwan, or possess equivalent academic qualifications. Applications are accepted from now until June 29, 5:00 PM.
Mainland China has suspended degree-seeking students from coming to Taiwan since 2020. In his 2024 inaugural address, President Lai Ching-te expressed hope to restart reciprocal tourism and degree-seeking student exchanges between the two sides, but this has not yet been resumed.
Yu Chao-tang, Secretary-General of the Joint Admissions Committee for Mainland Chinese Students, told CNA reporters today that currently, only mainland students already studying in Taiwan can pursue master's or doctoral degrees in Taiwan. Since the number of mainland undergraduate students has reached zero (excluding those with deferred graduation), and this year's new restriction prevents applicants from applying to programs of the same or lower academic level for which they already hold a degree (e.g., those with a master's degree cannot apply to master's programs, and those with a doctoral degree cannot apply to master's programs), it is estimated that the number of eligible applicants will be even lower than last year (612 people).
