The "Innovation and Entrepreneurship Incentive Program" (FITI), guided by the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) and executed by the Science and Technology Policy Research and Information Center (STPI) of the National Applied Research Laboratories (NARLabs), held its first-phase finals and award ceremony on the 16th. Atlas, Connova Bio, and Macrophage Power were among the teams that stood out, winning the "Outstanding Entrepreneurship Award" and NT$1 million in startup funding.
Lin Chun-liang, Vice President of NARLabs and Acting Director of STPI, pointed out that since its launch in 2013, the program has nurtured over a thousand academic and research-based startup teams, fostering nearly 600 new companies and attracting over NT$13.5 billion in private investment. It has become a vital platform for commercializing Taiwan's scientific research achievements and incubating startups. He also expressed gratitude to corporate partners like TSMC and Acer for their support in transforming academic research into competitive new ventures.
Stan Shih, founder of Acer and Honorary Dean of the FITI program, stated via video that the most crucial aspect of entrepreneurship is a sense of mission – thinking about how to create new value for society and industry. He identified value, creativity, and execution as the three key elements for successful startups. He said: "(Original sound) Participating in this competition is about innovation, creating value, and starting a business. The most important thing is to have a mission, which is to create new value for society and industry. This requires continuous innovation, guidance by value, and finding ways to implement it. These are the three fundamental factors: value, creativity, and execution."
Shih further elaborated that besides technology, funding, and the team, seizing the right timing is also a critical factor for startup success. When market timing is ripe, the team possesses core capabilities, and they persevere without giving up, the chances of success significantly increase. He encouraged the teams to continue creating new value for society through innovation, developing internationally competitive products and services, and making greater contributions to Taiwan and the global community.
