World No. 1, "Taiwanese Boxing Queen" Huang Hsiao-wen, faced a tough challenge from Indian opponent Poonam Poonam in the Round of 16 of the Women's 54kg category at the Boxing WB Cup China, organized by the World Boxing Union (World Boxing), on the 16th. Despite the opponent's constant clinching throughout the match, Huang secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory, successfully advancing to the quarterfinals.
Huang Hsiao-wen, currently ranked No. 1 in the World Boxing Union's Women's 54kg division, received a bye in the first round of the Boxing WB Cup China. Her first match today was in the Round of 16 against India's Poonam.
Following her usual tactics, Huang utilized her height and reach advantage, maintaining distance and scoring with jabs. However, her opponent, Poonam, employed a "clinching style" from the first round, continuously closing the distance and grappling with Huang. This resulted in a 1-1 tie after the first two rounds.
In the crucial third round, Huang abandoned her conservative approach and attacked aggressively. She ultimately secured a narrow 3-2 victory with scores of 29-28, 29-28, 28-29, 27-30, and 29-28. Huang's next opponent in the quarterfinals will be 30-year-old French boxer Wassila Lkhadiri.
Coach Liu Tsung-tai stated that Huang had not competed since the Asian Championships in April, and this first match was about regaining her rhythm. "The opponent's style was very clinchy, and she was a bit unaccustomed to it at first, but fortunately, she adjusted quickly."
Meanwhile, Taiwanese male boxer Peng Chia-feng, who has already qualified for the Asian Games, competed in the Round of 32 of the 55kg category today against Meylis Shadurdyyev of Turkmenistan. Peng displayed strong determination and offensive techniques, landing multiple hits on his opponent. In the third round, the opponent even adopted a provocative stance with his hands down and was penalized by the referee.
Peng Chia-feng ultimately won the match 5-0. In the Round of 16, he will face American boxer Lorenzo Patricio, who won the U19 World Championship gold medal in 2024. (Editor: Liao Yi-ting)
