bella@@ 央廣 新聞23h agoEdited
Meta's social media platform Threads yesterday (15th) experienced an unexpected wave of account suspensions. The Digital Development Ministry stated in the evening that it has requested Meta's active assistance in restoring accounts and has launched an investigation to protect the digital rights of the public.
The Ministry of Digital Affairs pointed out that according to media reports, from late night on the 14th to the morning of the 15th, the Threads accounts of several celebrities and media outlets were blocked, including influencer Ba Jiong, former legislator Chen Po-wei, Taoyuan City Councilor Huang Chiung-hui, FTV News, Taiwan People's Party founding chairman Ko Wen-je, influencer Holger, and the Kuomintang Youth League were all affected.
The official reason given by Threads for the blocking was "under 13 years old."
After receiving public complaints on the morning of the 15th, the Ministry of Digital Affairs proactively contacted Meta Taiwan to handle the issue. Meta responded that preliminary judgment suggests it might be a technical problem arising from the age verification mechanism, not targeting specific groups or individuals. Meta also stated it would proceed with unblocking as soon as possible.
Meta also issued a statement in the evening, saying that due to a technical error, a small number of accounts were mistakenly identified as users under 13 years old. They are actively addressing and fixing the issue promptly.
The Ministry of Digital Affairs indicated that if Threads users in Taiwan have their accounts mistakenly suspended, they can appeal through the following three official channels: first, the Facebook account suspension appeal channel; second, the Instagram account suspension appeal channel; and third, the Threads account suspension appeal channel.
The Ministry of Digital Affairs stated that it will uphold its stance of protecting the public's digital rights, continue to monitor the progress of the investigation into this incident, demand that the operator communicate and explain to the public, actively handle the situation, and jointly safeguard the public's information security and legal rights.
