One of the largest Chinese schools in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area, the Washington School of Chinese, held its 40th-anniversary dinner on the evening of the 14th. School Chairperson Li Zhong-hui stated in an interview that the school has always emphasized both language and culture, and is committed to promoting traditional Chinese characters. Students mentioned that while learning Chinese can sometimes be difficult in terms of recognizing characters and writing sentences, the cultural classes are very interesting. The Washington School of Chinese was registered in Maryland in 1986 as a non-profit private school. A 40th-anniversary appreciation dinner was held on the evening of the 14th, with Overseas Community Affairs Council Chairperson Hsu Chia-ching also attending to show support. The event also featured various cultural performances by the school's students, including calligraphy demonstrations and Chinese song performances. Li Zhong-hui told a Central News Agency reporter that the school's English name, Washington School of Chinese Language and Culture, well interprets its founding mission: "Our school has always emphasized both language and culture." She pointed out that the school was co-founded by five immigrant families from Taiwan, hoping to establish a suitable Chinese school for their children overseas. They believed that not only language but also cultural inheritance is equally important. Li Zhong-hui stated that the school currently offers courses for students aged 3 to 18. Classes are held for two and a half hours every weekend, including one hour of Chinese language instruction, half an hour of cultural introduction, and one hour of dynamic cultural activities. Li Zhong-hui noted that the school's textbooks and teaching materials are sourced from Taiwan, and the teaching staff are also primarily from Taiwan. For 40 years, the school has been committed to promoting traditional Chinese characters. Shen Rui-en, a student who participated in the singing performance on the evening of the 14th, said in an interview that she has been attending the Washington School of Chinese for six years. The biggest benefit of learning Chinese is that she can communicate with her grandmothers and grandfather in Taiwan in Chinese. 13-year-old Shen Rui-en said that learning Chinese can be difficult at times, including challenges with recognizing characters or writing sentences, requiring her to ask her parents or older sister for help with homework. However, there are also enjoyable aspects, such as the cultural classes, which are very interesting and allow her to learn about Taiwanese culture and games. She plans to continue studying at the Washington School of Chinese until she is 18 years old. (Editor: Chung Chin-lung) Source Link: https://www.rti.org.tw/news?uid=3&pid=214574
